Entropion & Ectropion Repair Entropion and ectropion are two common age-related eyelid conditions in which the eyelid margin turns inward (entropion) or outward (ectropion) rather than lying flush against the eye. Entropion causes lashes to rub against the cornea, leading to irritation, redness, and, if untreated, potential corneal damage. Ectropion, on the other hand, exposes the inner eyelid surface, often resulting in chronic dryness, tearing, and irritation. Both are typically caused by age-related loosening of the eyelid tissue and supporting structures.
Correction is a relatively straightforward outpatient surgical procedure that tightens and repositions the eyelid to restore its normal alignment against the eye. Most patients experience immediate relief from irritation and tearing, and recovery is typically brief, with stitches removed or dissolving within one to two weeks. Left untreated, both conditions tend to worsen over time, making earlier evaluation and treatment generally more comfortable for the patient.
