Patient Information
Upper respiratory infections are caused by viruses like the common cold or influenza (flu). These infections affect the nose, throat, and airways. The flu is typically more severe than the common cold.
Signs & Symptoms
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Mild body aches
- Low-grade fever
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Sneezing
- Congestion
Labs
- Rapid flu test (if flu is suspected)
- Throat culture (to rule out strep throat)
- COVID-19 test (if there is suspicion)
Treatments
- Rest and hydration
- Over-the-counter medications for pain relief (e.g., acetaminophen, ibuprofen)
- Nasal decongestants or antihistamines
- Cough syrup or lozenges
- Antiviral medications (if diagnosed with flu and caught early)
Follow-Up
- If symptoms worsen or last longer than 10 days, or if fever persists, follow up with a healthcare provider.
- Return if symptoms worsen, particularly if breathing difficulties arise.
