Dry Eye Syndrome

Chronic dry eye is one of the most common complaints among patients over 65, caused by a natural decline in tear production and changes in tear film quality that come with age. Symptoms often include a persistent gritty or burning sensation, redness, light sensitivity, and, paradoxically, episodes of excessive watering as the eye overcompensates for dryness. Left unmanaged, chronic dryness can damage the surface of the eye and make daily activities like reading, driving, or using a computer uncomfortable.

About Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry Eye Syndrome Chronic dry eye is one of the most common complaints among patients over 65, caused by a natural decline in tear production and changes in tear film quality that come with age.
Treatment typically starts conservatively with artificial tears, prescription anti-inflammatory drops, or punctal plugs to help retain natural moisture, but an oculoplastic evaluation is valuable when dryness is linked to eyelid position or function rather than tear production alone. Conditions like incomplete blinking, mild ectropion, or lax eyelids can all worsen dry eye symptoms, and correcting the underlying eyelid issue often provides more lasting relief than drops alone. Patients typically notice improved comfort within weeks of starting an appropriate treatment plan.
